SuperFan is a self-aware branded vertical that shows how vertical storytelling can work beyond classic romance, CEO, or standard trope-driven formats. The series built around The All-American Rejects combines horror comedy, music promotion, and microdrama, making it far more interesting than a regular album campaign or traditional social media rollout.
What makes it especially interesting is seeing actors in different kinds of roles. In vertical formats, actors are often quickly associated with very specific tropes. SuperFan shows that there is much more range there. Since only eight episodes have been released so far, we obviously have not seen all the familiar vertical faces yet, but the first impressions already work really well.
Anna Lore is absolutely convincing as Danica. She plays this unhinged, dangerous fan with so much energy that you immediately believe the character. In episode 8, Eric Guilmette also appears as Josh — a face many viewers may know from typical vertical dramas. Here, he plays a, let’s say, very strange manager and gets to show a completely different side.
One small criticism for me is the strong Misery vibe. The captivity and obsession storyline quickly brings Annie Wilkes to mind, which personally takes away a bit from the vertical’s own atmosphere for me. Maybe that association was intentional, or maybe a slightly different approach could have made it feel more distinct.
Another really clever element is the meta layer: superfan Danica (@rejectdanica) has her own Instagram profile. So even outside the vertical, you can see just how obsessed she really is. That turns the series into more than just a 31-episode microdrama — it becomes a small campaign world that continues to live on social media.
For me, SuperFan is a great example of where verticals can go next: not just as a series format, but as a campaign, a music video extension, and a pop culture playground.
